The Hunt for October
It’s time for October baseball! Fans of America’s national pastime have been eagerly awaiting these words to be uttered since the season began back in April.
While we will not have the mythical broadcasting voice of Vin Scully to usher in this post-season, it is still set to be quite an exciting one.
In the American League, we have the Texas Rangers as the top seed with a regular season record of 95-67, the second best record in baseball. They have achieved the first seed in thanks to a top 10 ranked offense in all of baseball and the number 4 offense in their respective league.
The Rangers will await their divisional series opponent in the AL Wildcard game between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles. Baltimore's Chris Tillman will pitch against Toronto’s Marcus Stroman.
The second of the two ALDS games has already been set, however. The Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox will square off for a spot in the AL championship series.
As for the National League, the first seed happens to be the Chicago Cubs, who have been the best team in baseball with a regular season record of 103-58. They have appeared unstoppable with an explosive offense led by Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo and arguably the best pitching rotation in all of baseball featuring Jake Arrieta, Kyle Hendricks, and John Lester.
Their opposition in the NLDS will be decided in a showdown in the Big Apple between the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants. The wildcard game will be headlined by the pitching clash of San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner and New York’s Noah Syndergaard.
The National League’s second divisional series will be between the Washington Nationals and Los Angeles Dodgers. The two will battle for a trip to the NLCS.
The stage is set for an epic postseason. The Cubs look to make history while the Giants will try to keep their even-year streak alive. Cleveland is striving to become Believeland once again, and the Sox are looking to send Big Papi out with a bang.
This is what it’s all about. The story-lines, the legacies, the streaks. Let’s play ball!
As the weather cools down, the pennant race heats up.
