Featuring the hit single, “Treat You Better,” Shawn as of September 23, is currently ranked number 1 on the iTunes Top Album Chart, and Number #8 on the Billboard Top 100 Music Chart.

Shawn Mendes is one of the youngest pop stars of this generation. He has come a long way from making 6 second covers on Vine, touring with Magcon, to slaying music charts and selling out arenas all across North America.

To promote his new singles and album, Mendes went onto the The Tonight Show to sing one of his songs “Mercy.” Reaching over 6 million views in under a week, the music video received much love from fans all across the world. On September 23rd, Shawn’s record company Island Records announced that he will kick off the Illuminate Tour on July 6th, 2017 to August 14th, 2017.

Illuminate features 14 brand new heartbreaking songs like “Don’t Be a Fool”, “Bad Reputation”, and “Three Empty Words.” Many of his lyrics have the same theme of a lovesick boy who is constantly getting thrown into a sea of heartbreaks.

In the song Mercy, he expresses his heartbreak by singing, “Please have mercy on me. Take it easy on my heart. Even though you don’t mean to hurt me, you keep tearing me apart.” The other theme that occurs is the complete opposite, this time it is about the boy who wants to just cherish and provide reassurance to a girl. “I don't know what you're going through but there's so much life ahead of you. And it won’t slow down. No matter what you do. So you just gotta hold on” Shawn stated in the song, Hold On.

His inspiration for writing this album comes from his close friend from home. Mendes stated in an interview with Teen Vogue, that he likes to write sad songs with happy feelings. “Sometimes really happy songs have really dark feelings. For some reason, it’s easier to write a darker song.” He also takes a lot of inspiration from Kelly Clarkson, Charlie Puth, and Ed Sheeran.

With Charlie Puth and Ed Sheeran vibes, many fans worldwide are attracted to his vocals and instruments. Jake Gosling, Ed Sheeran’s collaborator helped Mendes write the songs and by the lyrics it indicated that Shawn really needs a hug or maybe even 50 hugs. However, we are still left with a big question, Who hurt Shawn?
