Hip Hop group Far East Movement who is well known for their 2010 hit singles “Rocketeer” and “Like a G6” came back with a brand new album. Their newest album titled “Identity” still features the electronic and hip hop sounds they were known for but on a higher level.
This album features many Korean Pop stars such as Chanyeol from Exo, Tinashe, Tiffany from Girl’s Generation, Jay Park, Loco, Hyolyn from Sistar, and Yoonmirae to western artists such as, Soujia Boy, Macy Gray, and Elijah Blake. With a total of 11 tracks Far East Movement captured the concept of unity by blending both English and Korean into styles of trap, pop, and electronic into whole album creating their identity.
Identity includes 11 tracks in this album each with a unique feel. Far East Movement took a trip to Asia to collaborate with many artists featured in the album.
The title song “Freal Luv” features Korean rapper Chanyeol from EXO, LA rapper Marshmello and American singer, Tianashe. The feel good vibes from “Freal Luv” comes from combining the sounds from the east and the west.
In an interview with Power 106, Far East Movement stated, “The song freal luv comes from the love we feel for music and our identity. We went to our homelands where our ancestors are from, so Korea, Japan, and China and we collaborated with Chanyeol who is from Korea and incorporated Kpop into American Hip Hop. Our identity comes from the combinations of our Asian heritages and the music from there and American Hip Hop. It shows our for real love.”
The next song featured on the album is different from others. The song “Umbrella” featuring Hyolyn from Sistar and Gill Chang is sung entirely in Korean. The eastern blends of music tied in with the soft acoustic guitar in the background and Hyolyn’s soothing vocals brings a fresh set of sounds into the music.
“Don’t Speak” featuring Tiffany of Girl’s Generation is certainly a “bop”. This song is aimed towards a girl who just wants to live her life and party. Tiffany’s low soprano voice flows smoothly with the hazy sounds of EDM.
Far East Movement placed #7 on the Billboard Music Chart for “Top Dance and Electronic Albums.” Far East Movement’s “Identity” was certainly a spectacular comeback after a 4 year hiatus. They discovered their identity through the album by successfully blending Asian styles of music and American EDM. Music unites everyone, and Far East Movement proved so.
