"Get Me That Baudelaire Fortune!"
Tragedy after tragedy is what Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire seem to face these days in Netflix’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Based off the 13 best selling series by Lemony Snicket, fans now get to see their tragedies in real life.
After the Baudelaire children’s house tragically burned down taking their parents with it, they are set off in the care of a kind banker Mr. Poe who carelessly puts them in the care of Count Olaf. Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris), a manipulative, “well announced actor”, sets his gaze to marry the eldest daughter Violet (Malina Weissman) in order to get his hands on their enormous inheritance. However, the children find out Count Olaf’s plan and immediately tried to stop it. They succeed with the help of their friend, Judge Justice Strauss who provided a library filled with law books that Klaus (Louis Hynes) used to prove his argument about the wedding documentation.
Like the books, every single character is oblivious to Count Olaf’s evil plans except the bright Baudelaires. With Violet as an inventor, Klaus a bookworm, and Sunny with her sharp teeth as a tool, the Baudelaires can see right through every disguise that Count Olaf portrays throughout the show. Each time Mr. Poe sends the children off, he disguises himself as an employee to make it look like he blends in with whichever environment they are in. The next episodes reveal the stories of their next guardians and the tragic events that follow it.
Throughout the show, Lemony Snicket (Patrick Warburton) makes an appearance describing what is happening to the Baudelaires to clear up any confusion. Most of his dialogue is telling viewers to not watch the show because it is a tragic comedy that will make people pity the show. However, his appearance spices things up and leaves everyone with a cliffhanger.
So far, the show has a 4.7 star rating with 8 episodes that covers four books: “The Bad Beginning,” “The Reptile Room,” “The Wide Window”, and “The Miserable Mill” each with two parts. The next season is set to cover the next five books with ten episodes, but no release date yet. Then season three following with the remaining 8 episodes.
For those who haven’t read the books, many have questions on whether the parents are alive and who the Quagmire siblings are. They will then have to wait and see for the disastrous events to unfold.
