Academy Award Predictions
This year marks the 89th Academy Awards hosted by Jimmy Kimmel with multiple movie masterpiece nominees. With that being said, it’s hard to tell which nominees could take home an Oscar for their categories, but here are just a few predictions on who could win the night of the awards.
Best Picture: The list of movies for this category are by far some of the more impressive films, though with La La Land being one of the movies among that list, the choice is quite clear. Earlier this year, La La Land dominated the Golden Globes, breaking a record and winning every category the movie was nominated for, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if it happens again at the Oscars.
Best Actor: The top two actors in the list of nominees for this category are Andrew Garfield for Hacksaw Ridge and Ryan Gosling for La La Land. Between these two actors, it’s hard to predict who could win the Oscar, as both actors did incredibly well in their roles for their designated movie, but once again, there can only be one winner. All that can be said is that it’s possible that Gosling may take this one, since La La Land has won many awards already.
Best Actress: The Academy Awards has been accused of being racist in the past, and in this category, Ruth Negga is the only person of color. Emma Stone may very well win this category for her role in La La Land, but it would be nice to recognize Ruth Negga and her role in Loving. Of course, it all comes down to the actress’ talent, but with the Academy Awards and previous accusations, it will be interesting to see the reactions of viewers if one were to win over the other.
Best Animated Feature: Disney has always taken home an Oscar for their animated films, and this year for sure will be no different. Moana is movie that will more than likely get an Oscar for this category. Not only does it feature people of color throughout the whole movie, its soundtrack is one that many will sing along to.
Best Original Song: This could be one of the hardest categories to predict since all the songs up for the Oscar are all one of the best. Justin Hurwitz’s “City of Stars” and “Audition (Fools Who Dream)” from the La La Land soundtrack are both on the list of nominees, as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana. Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” is also a nominee. If it comes down to it, as catchy as all the songs are, Justin Hurwitz’s “City of Stars” could be the Academy Award winner.
Regardless of who wins on the night of the Oscars, all the movies that were nominated were, at the very least, recognized for the hard work put in for the final product. The real winners, whether the predictions are right or not, will be announced at the Academy Awards on February 26th.
