Success with Superheroes

“Friendship. Teamwork. Action.” Freshmen, Tri Huynh said that these characteristics are essential to a superhero movie. Huynh continued in-depth to explain that in the making of a good superhero movie, “the characters need a good backstory, the action needs a purpose, and there needs to be closure.”

What movie comes to your mind when thinking of a good superhero movie? Most likely the movie you’ve thought of is from the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- better known as the MCU. This is a very popular movie franchise that features the stories of iconic Marvel characters. The franchise consists of 20 movies to date; however, many more films are currently underway. These installments include: “Black Widow,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” sequels to the “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel,” and many more. Fans are also anticipating the new TV series being developed, such as: “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “WandaVision,” and “What If…?”

Sophomore, Michael Samuel attributed most of the films' success to the actors who bring the characters to life and allow for a connection between the viewers and the characters. However, the actors are not the only ones who should be credited for the success of the films. Behind the scenes, technicians, artists, and writers work to adapt these stories from the comic pages to the screen. This includes scriptwriters, directors, producers, marketing teams, sound artists, special effects teams, makeup artists, and many others. Overall, the success of the franchise is shared between a wide group of people. Because of the effort they put into these films, the MCU is a cultural phenomenon loved by many.
