Is the Popularity of Japanese Anime on the Rise?

Whether you’re a fan of Japanese culture or not, it is quite likely that you have heard of Anime. Anime is a genre of shows that are usually based on Japanese style comic books called manga, and are later animated into shows that tell a variety of different stories, from tales of two rivaling ninja in the anime Naruto, to covering topics of depression, suicide, and bullying in shows such as Wonder Egg Priority. Anime’s history can be traced back to the start of the 20th century, with the earliest films dating back to 1906. Still, despite anime's long existence, it seems that it has gained a sudden surge in popularity among people across the United States and the rest of the world within recent months and years.
With all this talk about anime and its growth in popularity, many are trying to hop on the bandwagon and are looking to start watching. However, anime wasn’t always viewed highly upon by others, “People used to really frown upon you if you watched anime,” said Freshman Mosses Feris. Before its rise in popularity, many would view anime in a negative light, “I feel that in the past, anime was more associated with shut-ins or degenerates,” said Freshman Mat Feris. Despite its rough past, many have become more open into trying anime, with social media sites such as Tik Tok, Instagram, and more actively promoting new anime releases.
There are lots of different genres of anime, and finding the right one to start off with can be quite difficult as everyone does have different tastes. If you are into lots of action, anime such as One Punch Man, HunterxHunter, and Bleach may be of your interest. On the contrary, if you’re more into Slice of life and Romance anime, movies and shows such as A Silent Voice, Plastic Memories, and Your Name may also be quite enjoyable. More mainstream anime such as Attack on Titan, (which is currently the #1 show in all of the United States) Demon Slayer, (which has been nominated for an Academy Award for its recent movie), and JuJutsu Kaisen (the 2020 anime of the year) may also be great places to start.
With popular anime such as Attack On Titan and Demon Slayer breaking world records, anime has caught the attention of millions across the globe. Anime can be for everyone, and it’s never too late to hop on the trend. Whether your favorite show is Stranger Things or Grey’s Anatomy, it doesn’t hurt to give anime a try, you never know what you might be missing out on.
A variety of anime including Naruto, HunterxHunter, One Punch Man, and more can be found on the popular streaming service, Netflix.
